An EgyptAir flight with 66 people on board crashed off the Greek island of Karpathos on Thursday.
EgyptAir said the Airbus A320 Flight 804 went missing on its way to Cairo from Paris. The Boeing 737 was reported missing from the radar after it took off on the four-hour flight.
Egyptian officials said "possibility that the plane crashed has been confirmed," the Associated Press reported. The news has not been officially confirmed and the officials spoke on condition of anonymity.
Airbus confirmed the plane was lost. Airbus regrets to confirm that an A320 operated by Egyptair was lost at around 02:30 am (Egypt local time) today over the Mediterranean sea. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight MS 804 from Paris, France to Cairo, Egypt," the aircraft company said.
The shares in the company sank after the plane was reported missing.
Egypt foreign ministry said it was working closely with France to probe the possible reasons for the crash.
Local media said eyewitnesses saw a fire ball in the sky, according to AFP.
The flight was lost from radar at 2:45 a.m. local time, according to the airline. Its last known position was above the Mediterranean Sea. However, the weather was clear and calm when the plane crossed over the Mediterranean Sea, authorities said.
The airline said on Twitter the plane had 56 passengers, including two infants, and 10 crew members.
