Sami Khedira has thrown his weight behind Bastian Schweinsteiger saying his former Germany teammate deserves to be treated well at Manchester United.
After being named in the club's Premier League squad, Schweinsteiger failed to find a place in the Europa League unit. The 32-year-old has also not started for United since manager Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford.
After battling with injury woes during the 2015/16 Premier league season, Schweinsteiger's future with United was in doubt. But he preferred to stay with the Red Devils during the summer transfer window despite being asked to train with the Under23 team.
"I would never be in a situation that a club asks me to leave. A player with a great career does not deserve to eventually be told: 'Hey, you're off'," Khedira told Welt am Sonntag, as quoted by Goal.com.
Khedira believes his former skipper, who retired from international football in September 2016, can contribute to the club by bringing in his experience. The irked midfielder labelled Schweinsteiger's situation at United a "shame".
"I think the situation in Manchester is a shame because Bastian is a player I've really looked up to. At the World Cup in 2010, he was very important for me. He was the boss, I was young and learned a lot playing next to him. And then he went on to be a great captain," the German said.
The Juventus star, who had played under Mourinho during his initial years at Real Madrid, said one had to accept his former boss' plans at United.
"On the other hand, one must also understand the clubs. Football is business. There is no gratitude in our industry. If Mourinho has other plans, you have to accept that," Khedira added.
