Angelique Kerber will take on Karolina Pliskova in the final of US Open 2016 Women's singles at the Flushing Meadows on 10 September.
The German, who recently became world number one, just took an hour and 25 minutes to outclass Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-final. The Danish player posed no threat to Kerber, who sailed through with a 6-4, 6-3 win. The second seed saw off challenges from Roberta Vinci and Petra Kvitova in her previous rounds with ease as well.
Kerber began her 2016 season by winning her maiden grand slam title at the Australian Open. She achieved the feat by defeating the top seed Serena Williams in the final. At the 2016 Wimbledon, the left-hander finished as second best after she lost her battle this time against the American in the championship match. Riding on her spectacular form, she won a silver medal in the Women's singles category at Rio Olympics.
"You know, to be the next German number one in the world after Steffi [Graf], it is really special. It is an honor for me. Yeah, it is just incredible, actually," Kerber spoke of her climb in WTA rankings, as quoted by US Open's official website.
Ahead of the final, the 28-year-old is wary of the big-serving Pliskova, against whom she went down in straight sets in the finals of 2016 Cincinnati Masters in August. She believes a day's rest before the big match will help her be better prepared to take on the Czech Republic star.
"I remember the Cincinnati final. I was actually really tired because I came from Rio and I had a lot of tough matches there," she added.
"Here I have one day off tomorrow, so I can really prepare for the final against Pliskova. I know how she is playing. I know she has a big serve.
"Yeah, I think I will go out there trying to get my next chance against her and take the revenge, of course."
On the other hand, Pliskova earned a spot in her first grand slam final after stunning Serena and ending the 34-year-old's stay of 186 consecutive weeks at the top of the rankings on Friday. The Czech had also sailed past her opponents in the previous rounds but had to fight a tough battle against Venus Williams in the fourth round. After conceding the first set against the 36-year-old American, the 10th seed came back from behind to progress to the quarter-final.
Taking confidence from her Cincinnati run, Pliskova is upbeat about Saturday's final. "It was always a dream to, you know, get a title, get to the semifinal, get to the final. So, I mean, it's a big result for me. I hope I didn't stop yet, that there is still one more step to go. I'll do anything for getting the title," the 24-year-old said.
While Kerber's consistent run would give her the edge over her opponent, Pliskova will be determined not to let go of a golden chance in her maiden majors final.
