Singapore to be known as SGP and not SIN at sporting events

The IOC database has been modified and the new SGP code will be reflected on the IOC website and in future games.

Singapore National Olympic Council said on Friday that Singapore will now onwards be known in short as SGP and not as SIN at sporting events.

Low Teo Ping, Vice-President at the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), posted on Facebook saying "It is official: Singapore is no more SIN but SGP at regional and international sport events".

Low posted that the code will be used in all future games.

The Singapore Golf Association also released a brief statement on its website on Friday.

"In line with the United Nations' International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) official 3-letter country code, IOC (International Olympic Committee) has approved SNOC'z application to change Singapore's NOC code from SIN to SGP", the statement said.

Authorities said the IOC database has been modified and the new SGP code will be reflected on the IOC website and in future games. The UN country code of Singapore is SGP.

However, Singapore's International Air Transport Association airport code remains as SIN.

The Golf Association said: "We hope to be seeing more of SGP on the leader board of our major golf tournaments."

At the Rio Olympics 2016, SIN code was used to represent Singapore on the results boards beside the names of Singapore athletes.
