Overview

Iran take on South Korea in the first semi-final of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup at the TransStadia Arena in Ahmedabad on 21 October.

While Iran have been the favourites to give a tough fight to defending champions India, South Korea's rise to the top of Group A has been nothing less than spectacular.

The East Asian team opened their campaign on a high, stunning Anup Kumar-led India by a narrow two-point margin 34-32. Jang Kun Lee came up with a stunning performance in the last few minutes of the game to help his team, who were trailing behind to finish on top.

South Korea have looked solid since then notching up five consecutive wins to become the only team in the group stages to remain unbeaten. They went on to edge out Asian giants Bangladesh 35-32 before clinching two of their biggest wins against Australia (63-25) and England (56-17).

Kun Lee and Cheol Gyu Shin have been South Korea's solid raiders with 29 and 26 raid points, respectively. Overall, the team has picked up 145 raid points in the tournament and are placed second behind India in the points tally.

In defense, Gyung Tae Kim and Yong Joo Ok have been effective for the South Koreans, who have worked well as a unit in the ongoing tournament.

On the other hand, Iran have a good mix of experience and youngsters in the side. They were favourites to top Group B but a surprise 41-25 defeat to Poland put them on the second spot behind Thailand.

South Korean raiders Kun Lee and Gyu Shin will have to be wary of Iran's strong defensive unit, which has been on top of its game in the tournament.

Led by Fazel Atrachali, who tops their list with 17 successful tackle-points, Iran's tacklers including the likes of Soleiman Pahlevani, Abozar Mohajer Mighani and Farhad Rahimi Milaghardan are expected to keep the South Koreans at check.

While Iran will be banking on their tactics centred around a strong defence, South Koreans will be hoping to make best use of their all-round abilities to topple their opposition and seal a final berth on Friday.
