Apple is expected to launch three new glass-backed models for the highly-rumoured iPhone 7 successor aka 'iPhone 8' in 2017. According to a recent Nikkei report citing unnamed supply chain sources, the company will be rolling out the next iPhone in 4.7in, 5in and 5.5in models wherein the 5.5in variant will represent the top-end flagship phone.

"Apple has tentatively decided that all the 5.5-inch, 5-inch and 4.7-inch models will have glass backs, departing from metal casings adopted by current iPhones, and Biel and Lens are likely to be providing all the glass backs for the new iPhones next year," the source said.

It is also reported that the premium or top of the line iPhone model will feature an edge-to-edge OLED display supplied by beleaguered Samsung while the other two models of iPhone 8 will incorporate the standard LCD displays as seen in the iPhone 7.

With a complete glass-design makeover of the back panel, the forthcoming iPhone 8 models will depart from the metal-body casings of current iPhones for embracing a unique look. The Chinese Biel and Lens will be manufacturing the glass back panels for the iPhone 8 by virtue of their technological edge over Apple's primary component supplier, Foxconn.

Given the scant details available at the moment about the next-gen iPhone, it is advisable to take this bit of info with a pinch of salt. There is no official confirmation or any kind of response from Apple regarding the ensuing iPhone 8 rumours and hence it seems like a wild speculation hinting at the probable specifications and features of the next-gen iPhone.

Furthermore, an analyst at the Yuanta Investment Consulting has suggested in his recent post that the iPhone 8 would also debut the wireless charging feature.
