President Barack Obama had strongly backed the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for the 2016 US presidential election. He urged Americans that he was more optimistic about the future of America than he was ever before. He said Donald Trump can't hear their boos, but he can hear their votes.

Time and again, Obama praised Clinton for blasting through "glass ceilings" as the first woman presidential nominee from a major US political party.

"I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman — not me, not Bill [Clinton], nobody — more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America," he said at a campaign rally.

In New Hampshire just one day before the US election, Obama said, "All that progress goes down the drain if we don't win tomorrow."

Here's a look at some of the inspiring campaign pitches Obama made for Hillary Clinton all of which, in the end, have gone in vain:

Obama has always been quite popular for his inspiring speeches among his supporters throughout the 2016 election campaign. Let's have a look at some of Barack Obama's unmissable quotes on the 2016 US election campaign.

1. "America is already great. America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump."

2. "Fair to say, this is not your typical election. It's not just a choice between parties or policies; the usual debates between left and right. This is a more fundamental choice – about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in self-government."

3. "This year, in this election, I'm asking you to join me – to reject cynicism, reject fear, to summon what's best in us; to elect Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States, and show the world we still believe in the promise of this great nation."

4. "America has never been about what one person says he'll do for us. It's always been about what can be achieved by us, together, through the hard, slow, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately enduring work of self-government."

5. "We are not a fragile or frightful people. Our power doesn't come from some self-declared savior promising that he alone can restore order. We don't look to be ruled."

6. "I need you to vote. Don't choose fear, choose hope. Don't choose fear, choose hope. Don't choose fear, choose hope. Go out there and vote. And if you do, we'll remind the entire world why America is the greatest nation on Earth."

7. "If you believe we're stronger together, then we can't elect a President who vilifies minorities, mocks Americans with disabilities, calls immigrants criminals and rapists. Our Constitution does not allow that. There are places around the world that's acceptable, but that's not the United States of America."

8. "If you believe that America is stronger when everybody does their part, if you believe that America is stronger when everyone pays their fair share, then we can't elect the first candidate in decades who refuses to release any tax returns; admits he has not paid federal income tax in years; somebody who stiffs small business people who do work for him or workers who've done work for him and he owes them."
