Facebook-owned WhatsApp has just announced the release of end-to-end encrypted video calling feature for all mobile platforms including iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
Folks at TechCrunch report that WhatsApp's encryption mechanism mirrors the one on FaceTime app to prevent unauthorised data theft and eavesdropping on your private calls and messages.
"We obviously try to be in tune with what our users want," WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum told Reuters.
"We're obsessed with making sure that voice and video work well even on low-end phones."
How to start a video call via WhatsApp
All users running the latest version of WhatsApp will be able to switch on video-calling feature by tapping a new Call button at the top-right of the screen. A prompt should pop-up on the screen asking you to confirm if you want to start a voice or video call.
The in-call screen is now updated with new controls to switch between front and rear phone cameras, mute or hang up the call. Your favourites and contacts list will be updated using the iOS 10's CallKit and you can invoke Siri to place a video call if your hands are busy with some other work.
WhatsApp video calling is now supported in 180 countries via Facebook servers that facilitate the necessary bandwidth for both voice and video calls.
WhatsApp for iPhone is now available as a free download via App Store while Windows and Mac users can get it directly from the official app website.
