Overview
Malaysia will begin their 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup campaign against Cambodia in Yangon on 20 November. Ong Kim Swee's side are heading into the opener following their 2-1 win against Papua New Guinea on Monday, which was also their final Suzuki Cup warm-up. Goals from Hazwan Bakri and Amri Yahyah ended their four-match winless streak and has given them some motivation ahead of the biennial tournament.
The Tigers, who have arrived in Myanmar for this year's edition, are among the weakest units to have played the tournament in the recent past. The 2014 runners-up lost some of their key stars including Safiq Rahim and S Kunalan due to sudden retirements in July.
The Malaysian side has clinched only one win since their retirements and is still struggling to find its feet. However, it finds itself in a relatively easier group [B], which also has co-hosts Myanmar and Vietnam.
Kim Swee though believes that the Tigers have it in them to reach the semi-final and wants to emulate former coach K Rajagobal's title winning-feat in 2010 with his men.
"Tactically we are on par [with the other teams] but during match day, with the right tactical approach and the right frame of mind we can beat any team," Kim Swee said, as quoted by the tournament's official website.
Shahrom Kalam and Shahrul Saad, as the centre-backs, will be crucial along with Matthew Davies along the flank for the Tigers. They will pair Darren Lok with Hazwan Bakri upfront, a combination that worked well against PNG.
On the other hand, Cambodia, who were impressive in their qualification campaign, lost their final Suzuki Cup warm-up against strugglers Singapore on Sunday.
The Angkor Warriors, who will heavily rely on Chan Vathanaka, need to come up with a strong show if they are to prevent Malaysia from grabbing three points on Sunday.
