Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took to social media platforms to wish Indians on Pongal celebration day on 14 January. Pongal is a Thanksgiving festival which is extensively celebrated in South India and in some places in North India as Makar Sankranti.
The prime minister, while extending the greetings in Tamil, also gave a background of the festival saying that it is celebrated in "Thai", which is the tenth month of the year according to Tamil calendar. Lee gave a brief description of the offering that is prepared during the celebration and revealed that he had learnt the recipe last year.

He also took the opportunity to urge people to visit Little India, which is an ethnic district in Singapore located east of the Singapore River.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak also posted his greetings on Facebook mentioning that the Thai month signifies a new and prosperous beginning.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Miniter Narendra Modi extended his wishes in multiple languages on Twitter to the people who are celebrating the festival.
