China gave a stern reply to US President-elect Donald Trump remarks about the country's policy for tackling independence movements in Taiwan - One China Policy.
"Everything is under negotiation including One China (policy)," said Trump in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on 13 January. According to the policy, Taiwan and mainland China are considered inalienable parts of a single "China".
On 14 January, China's foreign ministry said that the One China policy "is nonnegotiable" and is the political foundation of bilateral ties between Beijing and Washington. It was also said that the ministry urged "relevant parties" in the United States to recognise the Taiwan issue and respect its sensitivity.

Moreover, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, according to IANS, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, which is represented by its only legitimate government of the People's Republic of China. The government, Kang said, "is an internationally recognised fact and no one can change it."
Taiwan has been a part of "one China" since 1979 and the statement urged US to abide by the commitments that the previous US governments promised and follow the principles of the three joint communiqués.
However, after Trump won the Presidential election he accepted a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan 's President Tsai Ing-wen on 2 December 2016, which was not well received by China and prompted a diplomatic protest from Beijing.
