Overview
Not many would have expected Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to meet in the title match on Sunday at the Rod Laver Arena. However, the former champions have shown the world their domination is not over yet and have turned back the clock successfully to set up another possible cracker.
After six years, the two legends, who have won 31 major titles between them, are meeting in a Slam final with their last match-up at the 2011 Roland Garros final ending in Nadal's favour. Both Federer and Nadal have suffered a title drought with the former's last coming at the 2012 Wimbledon and the latter's at the 2014 French Open.

Coming back from injuries that marred their 2016 campaign, both stars have exceeded expectations. Federer has romped his way into the final with wins over three top-10 players - Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori and Stanislas Wawrinka. The semi-final battle against his compatriot on Friday was a five-setter in which the fourth seed came back from behind after losing the first two sets only to lose the decider and eventually the match 5-7, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6.
On the other hand, Nadal was pushed to the brink by 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov in semi-final battle that extended to nearly five hours on Saturday. The world number nine lost the fourth seed but clinched a crucial break in the decider to end the Bulgarian's spirited run in Australia this season. The most welcoming site with Nadal in his comeback run has been the return of his never-say-die attitude, which he showcased in the Round of 32 clash against German teenager Alexander Zverev.
Nadal, who is eyeing his 15th Slam title, holds a 23-11 head-to-head advantage over his opponent and also a 6-2 lead in Slam finals as well. However, four of those wins have come on clay and it still is even between the two on faster surfaces. However, looking at their current form, there is very little to separate the two. But with Federer having an extra day's rest, a lot will depend on how fit the Spaniard is on the big night.
