In the Year of the Rooster, authorities are against people keeping these animals at Housing Board flats as pets. When a resident asked Straits Times if she can keep roosters in residential homes in Singapore, the answer that came was not very favourable.

It was reported that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority said that people who have private residences can keep the bird, provided they adhere to certain rules, but it is a big no-no for the other residents.

According to the rules, owners of private residences can keep up to 10 chickens at home. However, they can be kept within bird-proof cages or enclosures only. The enclosures should also have fine wire mesh netting, which will prevent the birds from any kind of contact with birds or animals outside the cage.

The authorities also said that the bird cage must have a proper roof and the owner should make sure that no droppings, waste, feathers and other particles of other animals are entering the chickens' cage.

However, keeping of any kind of animal or bird in the house calls for full commitment from the owner as pets become a part of the family and should not be abandoned just because the owner lost interest in it.
