Overview
Chris Gayle returns to Twenty20 action after missing this year's Big Bash League tournament and he will be plying his trade with Karchi Kings following his move from Lahore Qalandars, for whom he played the inaugural season.
Karachi, who made it to the playoffs last season despite winning only two games in the group stages, will look to better their record under their new skipper Kumar Sangakkara. With the likes of Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Mahela Jayawardene, Ravi Bopara (last season's top-scorer) and Kieron Pollard in their squad, the batting unit looks capable of making it big this season.
With experienced campaigners in their middle order, Gayle will have less pressure on him and thus the license to go big from the word go. Along with a strong batting line-up, Karachi also have a good mix of experience and youth in the bowling camp to produce the right results this season. Pakistan internationals Mohammad Amir, Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali along with Ryan McLaren form a formidable pace unit.
On the other hand, Peshawar Zalmi were thrashed by defending champions Islamabad United in the season opener on Tuesday. On a day when spinners were on the expensive side, Darren Sammy's men lost by seven wickets despite posting 190 on the board.
Kamran Akmal's 48-ball 88 and David Malan's 30-ball 43 went in vain as Brad Haddin struck a 39-ball 73 for Islamabad to steer his team to gun down the revised 173-run target with two balls to spare.
While Peshawar will be reasonably happy with their batting effort, they would want more from their bowlers who were taken to the cleaners on Thursday. However, the likes of Sammy, Chris Jordan and Shahid Afridi are experienced enough to make a comeback and put up a fight against Gayle and Co.
