Singapore, which is often considered as the hotbed of technological innovation, has launched a cyber security facility to order to battle cyber terrorism. The major step is expected to facilitate research within the academic intelligentsia and major industry players and make the country a ground zero for such developments.

National University of Singapore (NUS) is going to host this $8.4 million site which aims to simulate a "realistic environment" for research and testing in the field of cyber security. According to the statement provided by the university and Singapore's National Research Foundation (NRF), this new facility is an initiative aided by various government ministries and agencies under the Singapore's cybersecurity R&D programme.

"The National Cybersecurity R&D Laboratory provides a ready-to-use, large-scale platform on which cybersecurity technologies and solutions can be simulated and tested in realistic environments. This would otherwise be very costly and challenging to achieve," Dean of NUS School of Computing Mohan Kankanhalli said.

The facility is expected to work on several key areas including that of large-scale experimentation and a comprehensive study on Distributed Denial of Service or DDoS attack.

DDoS attack enables a perpetrator to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its target demographic by temporarily or indefinitely interrupting or suspending services of a host connected to the Internet. This is done by using botnets and it has emerged as a pressing concern in the war against cyber attacks.

Though in this digital era, humanity is making progress in leaps and bounds, it has also fallen prey to cyber attacks. Moreover, cyber terrorism, a term only found in journals, has become a reality and is spreading like wildfire.
