The Internet has grown a lot from its erstwhile nascent stages, where even having two web pages buffering at the same time was an arduous task. However, things have really changed for the better and according to the State of the Internet report for Q4 2016 published by Akamai Technologies; the global average Internet connection speed has reached to 7 Mbps marking an increase of 26% year-on-year.
In the fourth quarter last year, every country saw a significant rise in their average Internet speed, excluding South Korea, which showed a 2.4% decline. According to the report, Singapore witnessed a staggering 45% increase in their average Internet speed on a year-on-year basis. The average Internet speed of Singapore was 20.2 Mbps and the quarter-on-quarter change on speed was 11%.
According to the report, more than 95% of the Internet users in Singapore have an Internet speed above 4 Mbps marking a year on year change of about 4.5%. A staggering 73% of the Internet users enjoy a connection speed that is above 10mbps and subsequently, 52% of the Internet connections have a speed of 15 Mbps in Singapore. Last but not the least, although, 25 Mbps adoption rates still remain low worldwide, 24% of all the Internet connections in the region are above or at 25 Mbps, showing a year-on-year growth of 201%.
After collating all the data available, Singapore's average Internet connection speed stood at 9.9 mbps in Q4 2016, which is considerably above the global average.
South Korea continues to lead the Internet race with the report citing that it has the highest average Internet speed of 26.1 Mbps, even after facing a sharp decline. Philippines hit the rock bottom after recording an average speed of 4.5 Mbps.
