An earthquake of 6.0-magnitude hit off the Solomon Islands in the early hours of Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 4.0 kilometres, some 170 kilometres north-northeast of the capital city Honiara at around 2:43 am local time (11.43 pm Singapore time Sunday). However, the authorities said that no tsunami warning was issued.
The Solomon Islands are a part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", which is a zone of seismic activity and volcanoes around the edges of the Pacific Ocean known for frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions.
In 2007, an 8.0-magnitude quake in the Solomon Islands killed 52 lives and thousands of people were left homeless when it created a 10-metre tsunami.
