The forthcoming iPhone 2017 variants from Apple are likely to feature True Tone displays in line with the 9.7in iPad Pro that was released last year, according to Investment Bank Barclays. It is believed that the iPhone 7s, 7s Plus and the iPhone 8 will incorporate "full spectral sensing" ambient light sensor to produce the True Tone content on their display.
The new True Tone display technology is expected to push the production cost of each iPhone unit by $0.60 to $1.00 on the material front. This technology will enable the display to automatically adjust its colour temperature and brightness in line with ambient-light conditions and thereby reduce the eye strain for users while reading the displayed content indoors or outdoors.
The True Tone display tech is expected to work similar to the existing Night Shift functionality offered in iOS, wherein the display shifts to warmer and yellower colours in dim-lit conditions while showing cooler colours during the day time.
With Night Shift mode offering True Tone like features on the software end, it is still uncertain if Apple would indeed bring the new display technology to its latest flagship phones, given the additional production costs involved in incorporating this feature.
