Singapore: Police seize counterfeit mobile phones, parts worth S$1.5m from syndicate

If convicted of falsely applying a registered trademark to goods, the suspects may be fined up to S$100,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Customs jointly busted a syndicate on Tuesday that was involved in selling counterfeit mobile phones and arrested eight people. According to reports, the estimated street value of those seized products sums up to almost S$1.5 million.

On Friday, the authorities said in a press release that the officers from the police's Criminal Investigation Department and Singapore Customs raided locations in Tanah Merah, Kaki Bukit and Harbourfront in a 10-hour operation. All the eight arrested men are aged between 28 and 40.

The authorities said a total of 10,660 pieces of trademark-infringing mobile phones and component parts were seized in the raid. Further investigations are going on into the case.

According to police, it takes a serious view of intellectual property rights infringements and would not hesitate to take action against perpetrators. If convicted of falsely applying a registered trademark to goods, the suspects may be fined up to S$100,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.
