A living room of a modern home is today incomplete without having a large television screen against a big wall. Although the usefulness of televisions has decreased with time following the advent of live streaming services and various other gadgets, some people still fancy large screen TVs. Two of the most popular TVs are those with LED and OLED displays. So, to choose which one will be perfect for you, here are some insights about both.

LED or the light emitting diode is the veteran between the two. LED TVs were basically LCD or liquid crystal display TVs. Initially, it used fluorescent tubes to light up the screen and later these fluorescent tubes were replaced with LEDs.

LED displays have better contrast and deeper blacks than the LCD version. The newer LED TVs also have a brighter screen and more vibrant colors. The TV set has now become thinner and lighter along with more earth-friendly because of the lower consumption rate of energy due to advanced technologies.

Organic light-emitting diode or OLEDs, the rather newer version between the two display technologies, are composed of carbon-based materials. These materials allow light to emit as electricity goes through them.

The most significant difference between these two screens is the pixels, especially how they are illuminated. In OLED the pixels don't need a backlight to illuminate themselves, they are their own light source, whereas LED pixels need a LED backlight to get illuminated.

This need of backlights also causes the size difference between LED and OLED TVS. Since the OLED technology doesn't need the backlights, it makes the size of these TVS to be thinner than that of LED TVs.

Although, the price of the OLED TVs is much higher than that of LEDs because of their premium technology, which is more expensive that other display techs.

As per Digital Trends, LED TVs also have another advantage apart from prices, i.e., better brightness. It's due to the quantum dots in LED displays that allow LEDs displays to get extremely bright. While OLED TVs are also very bright, using them with the highest brightness settings for extended periods can affect their life spans.

OLED wins when it comes to angles because it can be viewed up to an angle of 84 degrees without the luminance degrading, while with LED TVs, you need to stay focused on the center of the display.

To conclude, both display technologies have pros and cons. LED is less expensive, has better brightness; and a longer life span and is also available in large sizes and 4K resolution. OLED, meanwhile, is thinner, has better contrast range, wider viewing angles, and is more energy efficient. It also has better response time and lag.
