Looking back to the time when people crowd some spots to catch some Pokémon, this is what Niantic has come so far for Pokémon GO. This is no longer the case today though as the fad has waned as days go by. At the 2017 Webby Awards, Niantic may have hinted the upcoming summer event of the game featuring the much anticipated Legendary Pokémon. Would this event draw trainers back to the streets?
Pokémon GO summer event
At the 2017 Webby Awards in New York City, Pokémon GO global product marketing lead Archit Bhargava accepted this year's Best Mobile Game award for the augmented reality game. "This summer will be legendary", says Bhargava.
This succinct statement has sparked reports that Niantic will finally be releasing some Legendaries out in the wild. There are 65 million Pokémon GO players and a huge chunk is expected inactive. Could the legendaries be the remaining hope of Niantic to market itself again? Only time will tell.
Summer event timeline
Niantic CEO John Hanke previously hinted the coming of "a legendary event". Legendaries Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos have started to make public appearances in the last months through datamining. For now, available datamined information points to this event to zero in on gyms.
A Forbes report, meanwhile, details the timeline for Pokémon GO's summer event this year. Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Enkei will be released supposedly each week of June. Raikou, Suicune, Luiga, and Ho-oh, and Mew will be revealed in each week of July. Lastly, Celebi and Mewtwo will begin to show up in August to wrap up the three-month long event.
However, this information has not been officially confirmed by Niantic.
