Rio Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling says he is happy with his performances at the ongoing Texas Senior Circuit, which has come at the right time ahead of next month's 2017 Fina World Championships in Budapest.
Schooling had inconsistent results in the lead-up to the world meet - he won a silver in 200m at Arena Pro Swim Series last month, but failed to defend his defend his titles in the 100m and 200m at NCCA Championships in March.
However, the 21-year-old has hit form with wins in 50m and 100m fly at the Texas Senior circuit, in which he also set seventh and 12th fastest timing of the year, respectively. He also finished second behind University of Texas teammate Jack Conger in the 200m fly heats, but has decided against competing in the final.
Schooling says he has achieved his target at the Texas Senior Circuit meet and that he will continue to improve in the ongoing meet to get himself well prepared for the world meet. Notably, the 100m fly Olympic champion has only one medal at the biennial event - 100m fly bronze in 2015.
"My focus is to continue working on things that I need to improve in and there will be one or two more competitions here in Texas for me to do that, before Budapest," Schooling said, as quoted by The New Paper.
"I came into this meet with a few objectives and I am happy with my progress so far. I managed to clock a couple of top times in the world this year, but that does not mean anything to me at this stage because what matters is how you do in Budapest."
Schooling will participate in a total of four events in Budapest - 50m, 100m, 200m fly and 100m freestyle. Notably, before the ongoing meet in Texas, he has not raced in the 100m fly event since his gold medal-winning event at the Rio Games.
