Singapore Changi Airport recorded five million passenger movements in May, 4.6 percent higher than in the same period last year.
In its monthly operating indicators report, the airport revealed that aircraft movements rose by 3.2 percent to 31, 200 landings and takeoffs whilst cargo shipment clocked in a strong double-digit yearly increase of 12.6 percent to 177,340 tonnes.
For the said month, passenger traffic was given a boost by a strong 17 percent growth in South Asia traffic. Changi's ten most active markets were led by India, which registered a 21 percent growth as Mumbai and Chennai figures rising by more than 20 percent. China also reflected a significant 11 percent expansion, with more than half a million passengers for the said month. This is about one in ten passengers at Changi during May.
Meanwhile, cargo shipments increased for the second month this year thanks to the broad-based improvements across imports, exports, and transshipments. The airport saw robust growth in markets like the United States, Germany, and Japan where there was a stable recovery in industrial activity.
As of the beginning of June, more than 100 airlines operate at the Changi Airport, providing access to some 380 cities in about 90 countries globally. Aircraft takes off or lands at the airport roughly every 90 seconds with more than 7,000 weekly scheduled flights.
Some of the notable events in the past month include Singapore Airlines increasing its Singapore-Moscow services from four to five times weekly and concurrently launching a five-time weekly service to Stockholm. The airline also launched two additional weekly services to Sydney.
