Actor Song Kang-ho and the Korean films "Confidential Assignment" and "Split" bagged awards at the 21st Fantasia International Film Festival held in Montreal, Canada.
In the Cheval Noir Award, Song Kang-ho won best actor for the film "A Taxi Driver," which was screened on the last night of the festival.
The best film award went to the Polish movie "Spoor (Pokot)" directed by Agnieszka Holland while the best director was awarded to Nattawut Poonpiriya of the "Bad Genius."
Violetta Schurwlow took home the best actress award for "Cold Hell" while Marianna Palka won best screenplay for "Bitch" and the film "Lowlife" by Ryan Prows was given the Special Mention award.
Choi Kook-hee's "Split" was adjudged best film and "Night of the Virgin" of Roberto San Sebastian was given a special mention under the New Flesh Award for Best First Feature.
"For its surprising sweetness, its assured direction, and its intense collision between sports film and crime drama that feels like The Big Lebowski meets Rain Man with balls, and with characters that never stray outside their lane and have heart to spare, the jury was bowled over by Split," said the jury, according to the film festival.
For the Action! Award, the Korean film "Confidential Assignment" directed by King Sung-hoon emerged as the winner while "Jailbreak" of Jimmy Henderson won a mention.
"We couldn't take our eyes off of Confidential Assignment's kickass action choreography and were captivated by its fun and funny script, putting the film above its contenders. In the vein of Walter Hill's Red Heat, Confidential Assignment brings back the late 80's action comedy with a splash, and we hope audiences will enjoy it as much as we did," the Action! Award jury said.
Organizers said the Fantasia International Film Festival attracted nearly 100,000 fans for 220 indoor screenings, two outdoor screenings and 12 virtual reality films.
It became the venue for the world premiere of films such as "Lowlife," "King Cohen," "Origami," "Mohawk," "The Laplace's Demon," "Poor Agnes" and "Friendly Beast."
Among those who attended the festival included actor Robert Pattinson and directors Josh and Benny Safdie.
