Considering the fact that OnePlus is a little bit sluggish when it comes to software support, owners of OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have been in quite a lot confusion lately regarding if they would continue getting software updates. While some argued that ideally, the software updates shouldn't stop, as these handset models are still in demand and are being used by the majority of the OnePlus users, other said that OnePlus 5 launch indicates that the firm is now taking things to the next step and will not bother with software support for its older models. Finally, this argument got resolved when a senior company executive assured that OnePlus 3 and 3T users that both these devices will get the upcoming Android O. Although this is good news, it was followed by a bad one - there won't be a major OS update coming to these models in the future. As per the statement provided, the firm will now take the Open Beta program forward with the OnePlus 5 after OnelPlus 3 and 3T gets their Android O update.
Looks like both the believers and naysayers were right in parts. The company's head of product Oliver Z. said in clear terms, "Android O is going to be the last Android version update we'll release for OnePLus 3/3T. We'll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates." Summing it up, there will be one major update, any update after that would be security patches and individual application update support for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.
So when can we expect these updates? Well, the August security patches will be released soon and the OxygenOS 4.5 will take around 1-2 months to arrive, according to Oliver. It is a bit of mixed news considering that OnePlus 3 is just about 14 months old and the 3T is here for only 9 months, so chances of people picking up these models now are slim. You can expect the Android O by the year end in OnePlus 3 and 3T, as Google is expected to roll out this Android update later this month only.
