Rafael Nadal will play against Kevin Anderson on 11 September, at Arthur Ashe Stadium for his second Grand Slam of this season and the third US Open trophy of his career. In a head to head count Nadal has won four matches against Anderson since 2010 including ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Canada, Australian Open, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris and Barcelona.
After two hours thirty-minute semi final match, the Spaniard finally defeated his Argentine rival. Although Nadal lost the opening set by 4-6, he returned in the second set and sealed the match by 6-0, 6-3, 6-2.
"After a couple of years of tough moments, it has been an emotional year. But being back on this amazing court and in front of this amazing crowd, and having the chance to fight for this title is amazing for me," Nadal told ESPN after the match.
On the other hand, the South-African tennis player Anderson won the semi-final face off against the Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta. Even though Carreño Busta took the first set by 6-4, Anderson fought back and secured his place in the US Open final by 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
"These Grand Slams are tough. We're privileged to play with some of the best players to ever play the game. It's nice some of them gave us a shot to make a run. This is why we work so hard. It was an unbelievably tough match for me. It was the first time for both of us on one of the most famous stages in tennis. I really had to dig deep, I think my emotion at the end summed it up. I'm over the moon right now. I've given myself a shot and I'll allow myself tonight to celebrate this win," Anderson said to ESPN.
US Open has its own historic significance. 2002 US Open final was the last grand slam, where two 30 above players faced each other. It was US legend Pete Sampras, who clinched the title by defeating his compatriot Andre Agassi. 2017 US Open final will be the seventh game of the Open era, where two 31-year-old players will be facing each other for the title on 10 September.
