A 30-year-old woman has been arrested by Malaysian police for allegedly forcing her 14-year-old daughter into prostitution. According to reports, the woman was trying to pay off her debts with the money.

Sarawak CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Dev Kumar said the police arrested the mother, who is from a kampung near Lawas town in northern Sarawak, at around 2.15 pm on Sunday.

"The mother had allegedly worked with a karaoke owner to sell her daughter in order to pay off debts," SAC Dev told The Straits Times. He added that the case came to limelight when the village headman brought the girl to lodge a police report.

According to SAC Dev, the victim claimed that she was raped three times by a man at a hotel. "She also claimed that the man had paid the karaoke owner RM1,000 (S$322) for her," he added.

On Sunday, the police have arrested the woman karaoke owner at around 3 pm.

"We are now looking for the man who allegedly had sex with the girl. The case has been classified as rape," SAC Dev said.

Currently, both the mother and karaoke owner are in the Lawas police lock-up. The authorities expect them to be remanded on Monday.
