Samsung Galaxy S6 receives Android 8.0 Oreo update via custom ROM

Samsung Galaxy S6 device with the model number SM-G920F can now get a custom version of Android 8.0 Oreo. Although this custom ROM is made available to the public, it is still under testing by its developers since Android 8.0 is fresh off the Google labs.

Installing this Oreo custom ROM on your Galaxy S6 device might render a few bugs. LineageOS-team, the developers behind the ROM, vows to work closely with users to improve it along the way.

Before proceeding to the installation process, you have to take note of a couple of reminders. First, back up necessary data from your Galaxy S6 since you will have to completely get rid of it from your phone. Second, enable USB debugging option on Settings > Development Options > USB debugging.

Third, make sure your phone is rooted and unlocked, and it should have a recovery tool like CWM or TWRP. Fourth, charge the device up to at least 50 percent to avoid interruption. Fifth and last, make sure that Galaxy S6 has the model number SM-G920F.

How to update Galaxy S8 to Android 8.0 Oreo via custom ROM

If you have checked off all the requirements above, then you are good to go. Just follow the simple steps below to update the Galaxy S8 with Android 8.0 Oreo via a custom ROM.

Step 1: Download the Oreo ROM for Galaxy S6 created by LineageOS-team at XDA developers.

Step 2: Copy and paste the ROM file on your PC if you have downloaded it somewhere else. Do not extract contents.

Step 3: Plug your Galaxy S6 to the PC using a USB cable so you can copy the download file and paste it on your phone's SD card.

Step 4: Disconnect the phone and turn it off.

Step 5: Boot it into recovery mode by simultaneously pressing the power, volume up and home buttons altogether.

Step 6: Do wipe data tasks. To do this, from Recovery, perform a full data wipe by pressing the Wipe button. Select the Swipe to Factory Reset option at the bottom. If you are new to Android 8.0, wipe Dalvik Data, System and Cache.)

Step 7: Head back to the main recovery tab, then tap the Install button.

Step 8: Once redirected to a new window, find the ZIP file. Select Swipe to Confirm Flash.

Step 9: Once the process is completed, reboot the Galaxy S6.

Check your software version in the Settings menu to see if your phone's operating system is updated.
