A 45-year-old Singapore man was jailed for 20 months on Thursday for violently abusing his pet dogs and later abandoning them. The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) revealed that 18 months imprisonment was rewarded to the convict for animal cruelty and the remaining two months is for charges of pet abandonment.

Details of the incident

As per the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore, Yeo Poh Kwee, ran down nearly 20 floors of an HDB staircase on Teban Gardens Road with his pet poodle, Yoyi. Later, he abandoned Yoyi in the staircase with blood stains present all along on the nearby walls and floors. During the run from the 38th to the 19th floor, Yoyi suffered multiple injuries and later died at the same place where it was abandoned.

As per Yeow, it was Yoyi's continuous habit of barking during his absence which compelled him to abandon it. Yeow also revealed that he was in a state of deep stress during the moment, as neighbors have continuously complained about Yoyi's incessant barking during his absence.

The man was also convicted of another similar crime, and was given 12 months of imprisonment where another dog named Brownie was killed on November 2016 as Yeow failed to take his ill poodle to the veterinarian.

A strong warning against animal cruelty

"AVA investigates all feedback on animal cruelty and pet abandonment and will take the necessary enforcement action," said AVA, reports Channel News Asia.

During the time of judgment, Judge Tham said that Yeow has not only abandoned the dog but has also inflicted life-taking injuries on his pet.

Yeo can serve the two sentences of 12 and 18 months for animal cruelty concurrently, while the two months sentence for pet abandonment will run consecutively.

The legal authority also banned Yeow from growing pets for 12 months from the date of his release from prison.
