Ilayathalapathy Vijay's movie Mersal has been ruling overseas from the past few weeks and has set new benchmarks at the Tamil box office. According to latest reports, Mersal is most likely to become one the highest-grossing movies of all time in Kollywood.
Mersal picked up good numbers at the box office in Canada by $200, 00, thus surpassing giant international movies like Warner Bros' Geostrom, Bollywood movies like Golmaal Again and Secret Superstar by a huge margin.
The movie garnered A$407K just behind Baahubali 2 and Kaabali in Australia. While coming to Tamil speaking areas in South East Asia like Malaysia, the movie debuted well with an MYR 3.10 and in Singapore around Rs.3.4 crore worth.
In addition to these, the recent Vijay-starrer has broken several records and IBTimes Singapore brings you the list of milestones that have been achieved by the new film.
Biggest Tamil opener in 2017
Mersal registered the biggest opening for a Tamil movie in 2017. On the first day, the Atlee Kumar-directorial flick minted Rs 47.1 crore with distributors' share of Rs 24 crore. Mersal was released in more than 3,200 screens worldwide.
Highest grossing film in Tamil Nadu on first day
Mersal shattered the first-day record of Rajinikanth's Kabali in Tamil Nadu by making Rs 24.8 crore from over 600 screens in the state on the first day. Kabali had minted Rs 21.5 crore on the opening day. Vijay's previous best was Rs 13.25 crore set by Theri.
Vijay's first film to cross Rs. 200 crore mark
With Mersal, Vijay has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark at the worldwide box office. Mersal becomes the fifth film in Kollywood to achieve this target. Meanwhile, it should be noted that Mersal reached this feat only from one from one version of the film, whereas the other films were released in multiple languages.
Mersal becomes Vijay's biggest lifetime grosser
With over Rs 210 crore at the worldwide box office, Mersal has already become the highest grosser in Vijay's career. The movie now requires about Rs 30 crore more to beat Vikram's I lifetime collection of Rs 240 crore to become the third biggest hit of all-time in Kollywood.
Sixth biggest all-time grosser of South India
Mersal can be referred to as the sixth biggest South Indian film. The list includes Baahubali 2 (Rs 1,700+ crore), Baahubali 1 (Rs 600+ crore), Enthiran (around Rs 290 crore), Kabali (around Rs 286 crore) and I (Rs 240 crore). It is expected that the film will most likely end up at fifth position.
