A huge majority in Australia voted on November 15, Wednesday in favour of same-sex marriage. After two months of a historic national postal survey, the final results came in full support of the gay and lesbian community.
According to the reports from CNN, the Australian Bureau of Statistics released the results on early Wednesday, which revealed that out of 12.7 million Australians 61.6 percent voted in favour of same-sex marriage whereas 38 percent voted against the rainbow-colour.
However, Malcolm Turnbull, the Prime Minister of Australia said that the response was "overwhelming" in favour of "yes". He also mentioned that before 2017 Chrismas, same-sex marriage would be legalised.
"They voted 'yes' for fairness, they voted 'yes' for commitment, they voted 'yes' for love. And now it is up to us here in the Parliament of Australia to get on with it," he told reporters in Canberra.
Bill Shorten, the Labour Party leader said, "I feel for young people who had their relationships questioned in a way I wouldn't have thought we would see ever again, but nevertheless what this marriage equality survey shows is that unconditional love always has the last word."
Famous sports personality, Ian Thorpe the Australian swimmer, who featured in 2004 summer Olympic Games, had revealed three years ago that he is a gay and earlier warned conservative politicians against delaying the legislation.
There are several supporters who were overwhelmed after receiving the result and posted their opinion on social media platform with #MarriageEquality.
