Cyclone Ockhi Update: Fishermen advised not to venture into sea

Fishermen's boats - 40 from Poonthura and 15 from Vizhinjam in Kerala - left for the high seas with food, water and communication equipment looking for stranded victims.Currently, Lakshadweep is facing the storm.

The latest Cyclone Warning for Lakshadweep Islands issued on Sunday evening stated that squally winds with a speed from 50 to 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph are very likely over and around north Lakshadweep Islands during next 12 hours.

Earlier, the Met department said the "very severe cyclonic storm 'OCKHI'" over east central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea moved further north-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours.

It further added that the storm lay centred over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea near Latitude 12.9º N and Longitude 68.7º E, about 480 km west-northwest of Amini Divi, 820 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 1020 km south-southwest of Surat as of 1730 hrs (5:30 p.m.) IST of Sunday, 3rd December.

Sea condition:

The warning also said the sea conditions would be very rough over and around north Lakshadweep Islands until 9 p.m. on Sunday night and gradually becoming rough to moderate during the
subsequent 12 hours.

Even the sea condition would be rough to very rough along and off north Maharashtra and
South Gujarat coasts from 4th night to 6th December 2017 morning, it said.

The alert issued by the Met Department advised fishermen around Lakshadweep Islands not
to venture into the sea during next 24 hours.

Even Goa, south Maharashtra and Karnataka coastal fishermen "are advised not to venture into Sea along & off Karnataka, Goa and south Maharashtra coasts during next 48 hours or until 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The southern part of Gujarat and north Maharashtra coastal fishermen are advised not to
venture into the Sea from 4th December for the subsequent 48 hours, said the warning.

Meanwhile, battered severely by the Ockhi cyclone, Kerala's fishermen community on Sunday launched their own rescue operations with 55 boats venturing into the sea to search for those who have not returned. IANS has reported that six bodies were found. Around 85 fishermen are still missing in wake of Cyclone Ockhi, it added.
