London experiences snow weeks before Christmas; Which other cities can expect White X-mas this year?

As London is seeing snowfall weeks before Christmas, the Met Office reveals the chances of a white Christmas in several cities.

UK weather warning after recent snowfall blanketed the country

London has been covered by a snow blanket weeks before Christmas, bringing hope in its residents of the possibility of a snow-covered festive season. A little amount of snowfall has been seen in the city and around St. James' Park, which is still a lot compared to London trends. After a Yellow alert on Monday, commuters in London have been facing issues due to the snowfall, which accompanied the coldest night of the year.

Warnings have been issued about ice stretches in the city's roads, footpaths and cycle lanes after Monday night saw temperatures as low as -13C in Shropshire.

However, residents are not able to contain their excitement about the possibility of a snowy X-mas, displaying it by posting pictures and videos of the snowfall on social media. The highest contender for snowfall in Europe is Stirling in Scotland. Yet, it has only a 12.9 percent chance of getting snow on X-mas day, states meteorological data.

The second most likely spot to see snow is Aberdeen, which has a 12.5 percent chance, followed by Inverness (11.29 percent) and England's Bradford (10.48 percent).

Decent snowfall has been experienced in northern England and Scotland as well, bringing the possibility of Britain having a White Christmas to 5/2 in London, 9/4 in Manchester and 2/1 in Glassgow, reports Metro.

World Weather Online has compiled a list of cities that are most likely to be covered by snow this Christmas season after analysing data from the last eight festive seasons. It has stated that apart from the above-mentioned cities, Newry, Carlisle, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolverhampton and Armagh are the highest contenders for snow.

The Met Office calls it a white Christmas if one snowflake falls during the whole day of December 25 anywhere in the UK. According to this data, London has a 21.77 percent chance of going white this December end, reports The Telegraph UK.

"The Dickensian scene of widespread snow lying on the ground on Christmas Day is much rarer. There has only been a widespread covering of snow on the ground (where more than 40 percent of stations in the UK reported snow on the ground at 9 am) four times in the last 51 years," says the Met Office.

Apart from Britain, Russia has the highest chance of having snowfall, showing a 60.89 percent probability. It is followed by Belarus, Finland and Tajikistan. The countries that will not see snow on Christmas are Algeria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, among 127 others.
