Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak died aged 91. He had taken ill on Saturday and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit in the hospital where he underwent surgery for some bowel problems caused by an old hernia, said his son earlier. On Tuesday, he died following complications.
The sources close to the president had denied that he had a stomach tumor. Mubarak's lawyer, Farid El-Deeb, had previously said that he was undergoing the surgery with the supervision of a foreign expert in coordination with the Egyptian doctors.
They had stressed after the surgery in January that his conditions are stable, and his vital organs are working well.
Mubarak ruled Egypt for 30 years until he was ousted following mass protests against his rule in 2011. He was jailed for years after the uprising, but was freed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges. Prior to becoming the President of Egypt, Mubarak served as the commander in the Egyptian Air Force from 1972-1975.
Mubarak made his last camera appearance in 2018 during a trial. The funeral will be held in the Mosque of the Field Marshal Tantawi, Fifth Avenue, east of Cairo.
