Justin Bieber has revealed that he has been diagnosed with a syndrome that causes facial paralysis. The legendary singer revealed on his fresh Instagram post that he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome. The star had to also postpone a number of tour dates due to his health issues.
The syndrome is a kind of rare neurological disorder that can cause facial paralysis.
Bieber has revealed that the right side of his face is unable to move and he could only smile and blink from the left side of his face.
"It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear—my facial nerves—and has caused by face to have paralysis. So for those who are frustrated by my cancelations of the next shows, I'm just physically, obviously, not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn't the case, but, obviously, my body is telling me I gotta slow down," Bieber said in his new Instagram post.
What Is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?
According to Mayo Clinic, Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox clears up, the virus still lives in your nerves. Years later, it may reactivate. When it does, it can affect your facial nerves.
The syndrome occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears. In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear.
Prompt treatment of Ramsay Hunt syndrome can reduce the risk of complications, which can include permanent facial muscle weakness and deafness, according to Mayo Clinic.
Bieber's Face Would Be Back to Normal
Bieber stated that he would now use his time in resting. The star also revealed that his face would be back to normal as he has started facial exercises for recovery purposes.
In 2020, Bieber revealed he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease as well as "a serious case of chronic mono." His wife, Hailey Bieber, defended the singer against online trolls who didn't take the diagnosis seriously, according to Complex.
