Japanese triathlete Tsudoi Miyazaki has died in France. The Olympic hopeful died after being hit by a vehicle during training. Japan Triathlon Union has confirmed the tragic death of Miyazaki.
Miyazaki was fatally struck by a car while riding her bike during a training session. The incident took place near Orleans, a city 69 miles outside of Paris. "It is with deep sorrow that the Japan Triathlon Union can confirm that Japanese triathlete Tsudoi Miyazaki, 25 years old, died yesterday, July 27," said Japan Triathlon Union.
French Authorities Are Investigating The Case
Officials in France are investigating the incident but so far they have not released any information on the death of Miyazaki. Some members of the Japan Triathlon Union have left for France to take monitor the situation.
The triathlete from Japan's Toyama City started triathlon in college.
Miyazaki Won Japan U23 Triathlon Championship in 2019
She won the Japan U23 Triathlon Championships in 2019 and was expected to grow into a leading, high-performing triathlete in the future, aiming to win medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, according to Triathlon.org.
The World Triathlon and the Japan Triathlon Union have expressed their deepest condolences to "Ms. Miyazaki family, friends, coaches and teammates. The thoughts of all the Triathlon Family are with you all in these terrible times."
Japan Triathlon Union Dispatched Staff Members To France
The World Triathlon has confirmed that "regarding the circumstances of the accident, local authorities are investigating and our local staff members are working through this tragedy. JTU has immediately dispatched staff members to France to join the training base staff to take care of the situation".
Last Weekend Miyazaki Competed At the Pontevedra World Cup
Miyazaki, who competed at the Pontevedra World Cup last weekend, was on an individual training camp at a triathlon overseas base in France.
