A driver of a rented pickup truck has deliberately run the vehicle on a busy bicycle path near World Trade Centre in Manhattan. According to local police and witnesses, the incident killed eight people and caused injuries to 12 on Tuesday, October 31.
The mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio called it "a particularly cowardly act of terror."
After that attack, the culprit jumped out of the truck with fake guns and local police have shot at him and took him to the hospital where he underwent a surgery. Authorities said that he might survive.
During the investigation, officers came to know that the attacker is actually a 29-year-old Uzbekistan-born Sayfullo Saipov. After receiving legal permission, the culprit came to the US in 2010.
Investigators said that Saipov has a driving licence of Florida but probably was staying in New Jersey. One of his family friends said that Saipov had some connections in Ohio, where he used to live and work as a commercial driver a year ago.
However, in terms of heart-chilling terror attacks since September 11, 2001, known as 9/11, there is a growing tendency of terrorist attacks in the US aimed at innocent people. In 2017 alone, the list is huge enough.
Here is the list of major terrorist attacks, which took place since January 2017 across the world:
April 15: The attack took place in the Rashideen district, on the western outskirts of the city of Aleppo. Around 126 people were killed in the blast. But the perpetrator's identity is still unknown.
April 21: Taliban insurgents attacked Camp Shaheen, the headquarters of Afghan National Army, near Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh Province. which left around 256 dead and 160 injured.
May 20: In the Southern Libya's Wadi al Shatii district, 141 individuals, including unarmed soldiers and local residents were killed and more than 100 injured after a terrorist attack. May 31: More than 150 people killed and 413 wounded after a car bomb attack near the German embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Although no group has taken responsibility for the attack, Taliban and Islamic State both have claimed to be the perpetrators of this horrific incident.
