Actor Gong Yoo won Best Drama Actor award at the 2017 Baeksang Arts Awards for his role as Kim Shin in tvN's 'Goblin: The Lonely and Great God.' While giving his awards acceptance speech, the actor was on the verge of breaking down in tears as he talked about how much his mother misses him. Gong Yoo apologized to his mother for not being able to visit her much due to his busy schedule.
As per an English translation provided by Koreaboo, Gong Yoo began his speech making a joke on his character in the highly successful tvN drama 'Goblin.'
"Up until a few months ago, I was a lonely but great Goblin and now I've returned to being a very vulnerable person," Gong Yoo said, making the audience laugh. Kim Go-eun, his co-star who played the Goblin's bride, was also seen smiling at his jokes, in the audience.
After thanking the entire production team of 'Goblin,' scriptwriter Kim Eun-sook, for her role in casting Gong Yoo as Kim Shin, as well as the viewers of the drama, Gong Yoo began talking of his mother. He said: "Since I was busy going between my house and the broadcast station, my mother says that she's become a bit disappointed in me recently. She says that I feel like I'm someone else's son and not hers."
Gong Yoo added, "This is because I haven't treated her well recently. I feel so sorry to her. I hope you stay healthy for a very, very long time." He was seen trying his best to hold back tears but it was obvious that he had become very emotional and missed his mother a lot. However, he pulled himself together in the end and said that he was grateful for the award and that it will inspire him in his life moving forward.
Gong Yoo also became teary-eyed very recently at his Taiwan fan meet, watching a video put together by his Taiwanese fans as a tribute. After calming down a bit, the actor said, "The tears I'm shedding are a form of self-reflection. I've been working for so long without taking a break, and I think it's made me very weak hearted. I will take your sincerity as a source of strength, and I will do my best to become a stronger person."
He had also become similarly emotional while reminiscing his 'Goblin' filming days, at Lee Dong-wook's Seoul fan meet. From his own admission, he says he misses working with Lee Dong-wook the most.
It was also learned that the 'Train to Busan' star had donated 100,000 Taiwan dollars to Taiwanese children suffering from chronic diseases, as part of 'Gong Yoo Live: Make a Wish in Taiwan.' He did so by selling 1000 copies of postcards of the actor.
