The 70th annual British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London yesterday. Musical comedy La La Land was the big winner at the event, taking five awards including the Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
Casey Affleck walked away with the Best Actor award for his grief-stricken role in Manchester by the Sea. Emma Stone, who won the Best Actress, called La La Land "an overwhelming experience."
"This country - and the US, and the world - seems to be going through a bit of a time, just a bit. In a time that's so divisive, I think it's so special we were able to come together tonight thanks to Bafta, to celebrate the positive gift of creativity and how it can transcend borders and how it can help people to feel a little less alone," she said in her acceptance speech.
Indian-origin actor Dev Patel won the Best Supporting Actor for his role in Lion. Interestingly, this year's BAFTA has Asian and other multiracial actors and actresses in their nomination lists. This was due to heavy criticism from the industry for ignoring works by other races over the years.
