India's Nifty breaches 10,000 level in a muted session

India's broader index Nifty briefly crossed the 10,000 level while Sensex hit a fresh record high on Tuesday, after better-than- expected quarterly earnings.

India's broader index Nifty briefly crossed the 10,000 level while Sensex hit a fresh record high on Tuesday, after better-than- expected quarterly earnings.

The S&P BSE Sensex lost 0.05 percent to 32,228 after rising as high as 32,374 earlier in the session.

The broader NSE Nifty pulled back after briefly crossing the 10,000 level, paring most of its early gains. It closed down 0.02 percent to 9,964.

In Asia, stocks remained subdued with the MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gaining less than 0.1 percent.

The corporate earnings season for the April-June period has started on an encouraging note, with most of the companies reporting upbeat earnings.

Idea Cellular jumped 5.5 percent after the Competition Commission of India cleared merger deal with Vodafone India.

Other gainers included Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel and Bharti Airtel up between 1.2 percent to 2.2 percent.

Among the losers, United Spirits fell 1.9 percent after the company was cut to neutral from buy at Goldman Sachs.

Market breadth was in the favour of gainers, with about 2 stocks advancing to every 1 stock that declined.
