Injury crisis forces Louis van Gaal to end Dean Henderson's loan spell at Stockport County

David de Gea picked up an injury during the warm-up session of the Europa League clash.

Manchester United have confirmed they have ended goalkeeper Dean Henderson from his loan spell at Stockport County.

Louis van Gaal has the services of David de Gea and Argentina international Sergio Romero as the first two choice goalkeepers, with Sam Johnstone being the third stopper at Old Trafford.

The Spain international picked up an injury during the warm-up before the Red Devils' 2-1 defeat to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League 32 tie. Johnstone is also on the sidelines, leaving Romero as the only goalkeeper available for selection.

An injury for the South American will then see no options available on the bench for goalkeeper position. This situation has forced United to end Henderson's loan spell.

"Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been recalled from a loan spell at Stockport County following injuries to fellow shot-stoppers David De Gea and Sam Johnstone," a statement read on United's official website.

United are without a win in the last two matches played in all competitions. Romero is likely to be in front of the goal during the FA Cup fifth round clash against Shrewsbury Town on Monday evening.

"It happened in the warm up. We have to wait and see for the scan tomorrow, then maybe we can say more but it was a big surprise," United manager Van Gaal said after the Europa League defeat.

The Dutchman's tenure as United manager is likely coming to an end as the 20-time English champions are enduring a poor run under the guidance of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager.

Sacked Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is the favourite to replace Van Gaal at Old Trafford. Inter Milan director Bedy Moratt confirmed the Portuguese tactician is taking the managerial position at United.
