Overview
Novak Djokovic will take on Kei Nishikori in the second semi-final of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals in London on 19 November.
The Serb emerged on top of Ivan Lendl group by making it 3-0 with a straight sets win against David Goffin, who replaced an injured Gael Monfils, on Thursday. He began the campaign by dropping a set against Dominic Thiem in the opener.
However, he clawed back with a superlative performance to defeat the Australian 7-6, 6-0, 6-2. In his second match, he edged past Milos Raonic 7-6, 7-6 and proved he is hungry to make it five out of five with a win in this year's ATP Finals.
Djokovic has won the tournament for the last four years but the run-up to this year's edition has not been great for the Serb. He conceded the world number one rank to Andy Murray in October after he exited the Paris Masters in the quarter-final.
The world number two has not won a tournament since his first-round exit at 2016 Rio Olympics. He went down in the final of the US Open against Stanislas Wawrinka and also lost the Shanghai Masters.
However, with a spring in his step after a perfect show in the group stages, Djokovic will fight hard on Saturday and give himself a chance to reclaim the number one spot from Murray, who faces Raonic in the first semi-final today.
Against Nishikori, Djokovic has a 10-2 head-to-head record and he has beaten the world number five six times in 2016. The Serb has also had the better of his Japanese opponent in the last two editions of the Tour Finals.
Nishikori, who is fighting for the year-ending third spot with Raonic, opened his campaign with a win against Wawrinka and lost a close battle against group leader Murray. After having sealed the semi-final spot, he lost his match against Marin Cilic.
On Saturday, Nishikori needs to be on top of his game to test Djokovic, who looks focussed on the job in hand.
