Philippines: 60-year-old man arrested for raping neighbor's teenage daughter

Since the case involves a minor, police authorities have not released the name of the suspect and victim to the public.

A 60-year-old man was arrested by Philippine police for reportedly raping a 13-year-old girl, who happens to be his neighbor. The police officers investigating the case said the victim's mother filed a complaint after she caught the suspect in the act at his residence in the municipality of Katipunan in Zamboanga del Norte in the Southern Philippines.

The victim's mother claimed that she became suspicious of the man after he started inviting her daughter to his house often. On learning that her daughter had not returned home till late evening, she went to the suspect's house and saw the suspect naked with her daughter. She immediately alerted the nearby police outpost that led to the suspect's arrest.

Since the case involves a minor, police authorities have not released the name of the suspect and victim to the public.

According to the 60-year-old man, the13-year-old girl came to his house at her own will and he claimed that they were in a relationship, however the victim's mother denied it.

Meanwhile, in Negros Oriental province in central Philippines, a 52-year-old man raped and brutally killed his 86-year-old mother by smashing her head. The suspect was identified as Roger Manaban, married and a resident of Sibulan municipality in the same province. The victim on the other hand, was identified as Josefina Barrera Manaban.

The suspect has been reportedly struggling with drug abuse that has made him mentally disturbed. Police officers investigating the case also found out that the suspect took some of the internal organs of the victim, cooked and ate them. The suspect is now under police custody.

The Philippine government has blamed proliferation of illegal drugs that has contributed to the rise of rape cases in the Philippines. President Rodrigo Duterte has waged a campaign against illegal drugs in the Philippines by authorizing police authorities to shoot drug peddlers and traders on sight.
