Overview

Philippines host Singapore in their 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup opener in Bulacan on 19 November.

The Lions head into the tournament on the back of a 1-0 win against Cambodia on Sunday. Yasir Hanapi ended their three-game goal drought and secured a vital win in their final tune-up match for the Asean tournament.

On the flipside, Sunday's win was also the first in seven game for V Sundramoorthy's side, a bad patch which has seen them slip to their lowest-ever Fifa rankings (171).

Sundram has been vocal about his team's inability to find the back of the net (four goals in their last eight games) despite having the likes of experienced campaigners in their ranks. He also conceded that his team will be the 'underdogs' in Group A, which has defending champions Thailand and also Indonesia.

The Lions will also face a stiff test right in their opening clash against the higher-ranked Filipino side (124), which is known for a physical style. With the likes of tall players, which includes captain Phil Younghusband, the Azkals relentlessly keep coming at the opposition backline and are also dangerous from set pieces.

Coach Sundram though is not looking too much into Fifa rankings but is confident of his side stepping up during big occasions. It will be interesting to see whether his side parks the bus or goes on the attack against a strong opposition.

"We are in a tough group with Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia but it's about us and the 90 minutes on the pitch, and how we focus and play the game," Sundram was quoted as saying by ESPN.

Philippines will also head into their opener without star forward Javier Patino and left-back Daisuke Sato - as they have not been released by their respective clubs. However, they will be led by Younghusband, who will have the likes of Stephan Schrock and Manuel Ott to do the job.
