Reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin believes that Tai Tzu Ying is unstoppable at the moment, but that the Taiwanese shuttler will find it hard to continue dominating the Women's singles circuit.
Tai, the world number one Women's singles shuttler, decimated Marin 21-15, 21-15 to race to her maiden Singapore Open title, which was also a record-breaking fifth Superseries title on the trot for her, on Sunday. Since winning the Hong Kong Open last year, she has won 25 matches on the trot and has not lost a match in five months.
Notably, the Malaysia Superseries Premier final last week was a closely-contested affair between the two as Marin took the match to the decider whereas she was completely outplayed yesterday. This was also the world number two's third straight Superseries final defeat as she had also succumbed to India's PV Sindhu at the India Open last month.
While heaping praise on Tai for her remarkable feat, Marin is hopeful of becoming the numero uno again. The Spaniard reveals she has to learn from her recent mistakes and that she will fight hard to dethrone the Taiwan shuttler from the top spot.
"I think she [Tai] is doing really good, but let us see how she can keep going, because it is really hard to keep (up) this kind of performance. Someday, I will be number one again, because I will fight for it," Marin said, as quoted by Today.
"I am feeling really good [physically] ... but I need to learn from all my three finals, just to keep going and working harder — but I will be back."
On the other hand, Tai says that she is not giving a lot of focus to records but that she enjoys competing and winning tournaments. After ending 2016 with a year-ending title at Dubai World Superseries Finals, Tai opened the new season with a title at All England Championships, after which she defeated Marin twice in title matches to win in Malaysia and Singapore.
"I do not have any special feelings in particular about winning five titles in a row; I just enjoy the feeling of competing on court, and the support I get," the in-form shuttler said.
