Actor Vijay Kumar has created history in Tamil film Industry with his movie "Mersal", which emerged as a huge box office hit with collections worldwide reaching a record of Rs 210 crore in just 12 days after its release.
Although there were rumours that the box office collection figures of Illayapathay's movie could have been concocted and unrealistic, the makers of the film have officially announced that 'Mersal' movie has crossed above Rs.200 crore worldwide.
Few trade reports say that Mersal is the second Tamil movie to enter the Rs.200-crore club after the top hero Rajnikanth's movie Enthiran. In southern India, Vijay now emerges as the third south Indian actor to have a Rs.200 crore movie in his kitty, after Rajinikanth and Telugu actor Prabhas.
Mersal has set new records in Indian and overseas markets. In Malaysia the movie is one of the highest grossers, with a collection of Rs 17 crore within 12 days since its release, after Hindi film Dilwale and Kabali.
It has become one of the highest grossing Tamil movies in the US, sidelining the lifetime gross of Ajith's Vivegam with a whopping collection of $1,290,125 and becoming the first film in Vijay's career to surpass one million dollars in the US.
In the UK, it has made an impressive collection of £615,966, just behind Rajnikanth 's Enthiran and also outgrossing his earlier films in just six days. The total collection of Mersal in North America currently stands at $1,663,343.
In Singapore, where the Tamil-speaking population is considerably high, the film crossed $1 million in collections.
Mersal is now placed at the sixth position in the top 10 highest grossing south Indian movies in domestic market, after Baahubali 2 and Baahubali. Will superstar Rajinikanth's Enthiran 2.0 to be released next year put an end to it will be seen soon.
