Beijing police said on Sunday that a woman was killed and 12 other people became injured after a knife attack took place in a busy shopping mall in the Chinese capital. The police said that they had detained the man who carried out the knife attack at the Joy City Mall in the Xidan district.
Local police said that while one woman could not survive due to injuries and died on the spot, three men and 10 women were sent to the hospital after the incident. According to reports other injured people are expected to recover soon.
Beijing police took instant action after they received the information. They identified the culprit as a 35-year-old man, whose surname is Zhu. Police claimed that he is a resident of the northern province of Henan.
The Beijing radio shadowed the aftermath pictures of the incident. Those pictures contained blood spattered on the floor several parts of the mall, including the last person who got injured during the attack.
Even though compared to other violent countries violent crime is rare in China, but in the same country at least 33 people were killed and 130 were injured when 10 men armed with long knives attacked the station in the southwest Chinese city of Kunming, in 2014.
In 2015, Chinese police arrested a man who killed a woman and injured a French man in Beijing's Sanlitun.
Since gun controls are extremely strict in China, these kinds of violent activity take place by using knives. When it comes to the reason behind such attacks, people usually bring the mental condition issue of the attacker.
However, police said that the accused of Joy City Mall incident has already confessed his crime. According to them, the culprit said that he carried out the attack to express his personal grievances.
